The Sexiest Woodburner

,

My latest wood burning machine that replaced my old pyrography pen kit has been in use for almost a year now. Small but powerful woodburner in the sexiest body that stands out from the others.

This is post is not sponsored by any manufacturer or company. It’s just my experience with moving to more advanced pyrography tools.

More work requires better tools

Because I was burning more and more pieces and spent more time working with holding hot pyrography pen I decided that it was time to upgrade my working tools. So I did what everyone does before buying a new tool. Do a little research online for any good woodburning kit at reasonable price.

After spending quite some time browsing through web page after webpage I soon made my personal favorite wish list of woodburners that I like. Colwood, Razertip, BrennPeter and Burnmaster were the ones that caught my attention.

My favorite woodburner wish list

The price range of selected burners was from the cheapest BrennPeter Junior at 89€ to most expensive that was Burnmaster Hawk at 186€. From all the information that I found on www I made my mind to buy Razertip since it was most favorited wood burner online. Just when I was about to purchase one from online shop in Netherlands a web banner of Slovene electronic manufacturer caught my attention.

I found my new woodburner

It has all that I looked for and it was love at first sight 😃

RDA Elektrotehnika Pirograf

Woodburner has adjustable power/heat temperature control, a smaller and thinner pen with changeable wire nibs, a great looking housing and affordable reasonable price – 85€.

This sexy cube from RDA Elektrotehnika is now my new woodburner that I’m using for all my projects.

What comes in the box

The wood burning machine comes in a small 16x16x16cm (WxHxD) cardboard package with a useful handle on top. First thing you see when you open the box are the user instructions that cover two compartments inside. In the bigger one is woodburning machine and in the other are all the accessories needed for starting with pyrography.

Woodburner specs:

  • dimensions 12 x 12 x 12 cm (WxHxD)
  • 1kg weight power supply unit with 1,7m long power cord
  • stepless temperature control
  • stable control circuitry for long consistent burns
  • use of Ni-Chrome tips from 0.3 to 1.2mm thick (30SWG – 18SWG)
  • maximum 16A output, 40W power
  • 12cm long pen with 1m long flexible power cord
  • pens’ head with two joint brass sockets with allen key screws
  • 230V/50Hz operating voltage/frequency

Woodburner

The housing of power supply unit is made from thick and durable black plastic in a shape of a cube. Burner is 12cm wide, 12cm high and 12cm deep with a total weight of 1kg.
In front is a big button with color scale that controls the temperature of the wire nib.
On each side of housing are cooling grills that provide better air flow and help burner to stay cool when operating at longer working hours.
On top is a protective lid that also serves as a very halpful handle for better and safer carrying. The lid covers a power switch and pyrography pan connector on one side and seperate spare wire nibs compartment on other side.
On the bottom is well hidden power plug together with power cord that it’s wrapped around the machine itself. The total length of a power cord is around 1,7 meters.
Because of the units’ small size and very nice looking design it does not take up much space on your desktop and with well thought out handles on top you can safely move it around.

Pyrography pen

Comparing to my previous pyrography pen with changeable brass tips this pen is much smaller and more comfortable holding in hand. The pen itself is 12cm long and 2cm thick. It has 1m long power cord that connects the pen to the woodburning unit. The head of the pen is little larger then the body and it has two joint brass sockets with allen key screws on top for attaching changeable wire nibs.

Wire nibs and accessories

This wood burning kit comes with 5 spare Ni-Chrome wire nibs with 0,9mm of thickness, an allen key for attaching the wire nib to the pens’ head and iron stand for pen to rest on when not in use.

Woodburner in action

First thing I noticed was how fast the nib heats up comparing to my old solid-point burner. In a matter of seconds the nib started to glow red when the temperature was set to medium. Wire nibs are made out of composition of Nickel and Chromium, also often called resistance wire, that heat up depending on how much electric current goes through. By controlling the temperature button on power supply unit you control how hot the wire nibs will get.

Second positive thing that I noticed was how better the pen feels like when holding in hand and how easy is it to control and maneuver when drawing or burning the wood.

Burning Japanese tattoo style Dragon with Lotus flower

When working on larger piece with the solid-point pen it took me very looooong time to finish. The pen often got really hot and I had to make pauses every hour to rest. I can now work with this pen uninterrupted for an hour or more without any uncomfortable sensation and overheating issues while holding pen in hand.

Very straightforward and simple shading with wire nib

Another great thing about using wire-nib burner is saving a lot of time with changing nibs. The solid-point burner takes up to 10 minutes to heat up and another 15-20 minutes to cool down. So every time when you must change brass tip you waste a lot of time just waiting. With this one I can now switch nibs and continue with work in not more then 2-3 minutes.

When working on different types of design you often need more then just one wire tip. Spear tip, round tip, skew tip, spoon shading tip, ballpoint tip are just some basic types that one artist must have. The best part is that now I can purchase some Ni-Chrome wire online and make my own wire tips so I can save some money this way too.

Best investment so far

Depending on the products that you make with pyrography and how much time you spend doing it, may largely depend also on your type of the tools you use. Meaning, that for a total beginner in the world of pyrography it is better to start with a solid-point burner because it is much cheaper than the wire nib burner. But this does not mean that with cheaper tool you can’t make equally nice and superb end products. It only takes a lot lot lot longer than using wire nib pyrography burner.

For me, this was definitely the best investment so far. I can easy now work for 8 to 10 hours non-stop without interruptions or breaks because of the overheated and hot pen. With ability to control the temperature of the tip my work now has significantly less overburning marks and the time spending making shades is much shorter than before. Now I’m also able to make my own tips from the resistance wire and therefore save some money and instead invest it into lumber and wood that I need.

If you are thinking of buying a new burner and upgrading from your old solid-point burner, my advice to you would be… Go for it! You will not regret it. 😉

Until next post wish you a lot of creativity in your work and peaceful mind.
